Our Arraiolos Rug's

Brief history: Arraiolos Rug's are original from Arraiolos town and its beginning is a mystery to all, including academics. The oldest known reference is from the 16th century. The rugs had their golden period in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, then during the nineteenth century there was a decay and production stopped, then reappearing in 1916 following an exhibition of Arraiolos Rug's at the Carmo Convent in Lisbon, organized by the illustrious Arraiolan painter Dordio Gomes. After 1974 a few dozen stores appeared with reproductions of old rugs and some looking for some innovation. By the 21st century only a few of these stores survived.

As we like Arraiolos Rugs a lot and recognize their reputed quality, at Alentejo Heritage we invest in a small production where we bet on a line of rugs that respects what we consider to be the tradition of the rugs (stitch, background, bar and fringe) with creation of new designs with inspiration on regional motives, in an attempt to combine sobriety, contemporaneity and innovation. Finally, since there is no type of certificate that guarantees that an Arraiolos rug is embroidered locally, we decided to identify the embroiderer of each of our rugs, proving our values as a serious bet on the sustainability of handicrafts and the populations that hold the knowledge.
